Local Group to Raise Funds for Lung Transplant

Lansdale, Pennsylvania -- With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant families are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-related expenses. Lansdale-area volunteers are banding together to raise funds for COTA in honor of Eric Hein of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Eric is the son of Wes Hein of Harleysville and Marjorie Bruno of Lansdale, but years ago, Eric moved to Raleigh, not only to marry and settle down, but also to be close to the world-class center for organ transplants -- Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Born in 1989, Eric was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. The doctors at Duke performed a lifesaving lung transplant on November 20, 2016. An estimated $50,000 is being raised for COTA by Eric’s family and their friends to assist with transplant-related expenses not covered by insurance. The Pennsylvania fundraising group, named “Lungs for Eric” has scheduled three fundraising events this year. The first is a Trivia Night, scheduled for April 21st at St. Helena Church, 1489 DeKalb Pike in Blue Bell. The group is recruiting teams of 10 for this fun, competitive, BYOB event which features dinner, soft drinks, dessert, prizes, and the trivia competition. Ticket price is $50 per person until April 1st; $60 after April 1st. Other fundraisers scheduled are a Black-tie Gala in October, and a Turkey Trot in November.

Donations may be mailed to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, 2501 West COTA Drive, Bloomington, Indiana, 47403. Checks or money orders should be made payable to COTA, with “In Honor of Eric H” written on the memo line of the check. Secure credit card donations are also accepted online at

Eric’s family has asked for assistance from the Children’s Organ Transplant Association. The organization’s priority is to ensure that a transplant does not financially devastate a family. One hundred percent of all funds raised are used for patients’ transplant-related expenses.
